Why We Started Lightbulb Lighthouse
Lightbulb Lighthouse began with a toy.
A very simple one, but one that meant a lot to us.
When our son was very small, he gave it a name: Lightbulb Lighthouse. In his little world, it was something that lit everything up - playful, curious, and full of possibility.
We loved the name, but more than that, we loved what it represented.
That feeling stayed with us, and eventually, it became the heart of our store.
It Started With What We Wanted for Our Own Child
When we became parents, we started looking at children's things a little differently.
We noticed how many products were made to catch a child's attention for a moment, only to be quickly replaced by the next new thing. There was always something newer, louder, or more exciting.
But the things we found ourselves drawn to were different.
We wanted things that felt thoughtful.
Beautifully made pieces that invited our son to play, explore, and discover things for himself. Toys that didn't tell him exactly what to do, but gave him the freedom to create his own little worlds.
Clothes that felt good to wear, felt good for the world, and made getting dressed a little more fun. The pieces that could be worn, loved, and passed along rather than quickly forgotten.
Little things that helped him feel big.
Those were the things we wanted to surround our own child with, and eventually, we realized we wanted to share them with other families, too.
Choosing Things We Truly Love
Lightbulb Lighthouse is a very personal collection.
Everything we bring into the store is something we genuinely love.
We look for pieces that make us stop and think, “I would want this for my son!"
Sometimes it is the way something feels in your hands.
Sometimes it’s something as simple as a beautiful material, an unexpected colour, or a tiny detail that makes a piece feel special.
Sometimes it is the story behind the maker.
And sometimes it is simply a toy that makes us imagine all the different ways a child might play with it.
We are drawn to independent makers, small studios, thoughtful designers, and brands that care about how things are made, not just how they look on a shelf or what happens to be trending.
We Believe in Buying Less, But Better
We don't believe children need endless things.
In fact, we think there can be something special about having fewer things that are chosen with care.
A toy that stays around long enough to become a favourite.
A sweater that gets worn again and again.
A doll that becomes a bedtime friend.
A wooden toy that starts with one kind of play and becomes something completely different a few years later.
We choose sustainable materials whenever we can, and we look for timeless designs that don't feel tied to a particular moment or trend.
Because we want the things we sell to last.
We love the idea that something bought for one little child today might someday be passed on to another.
A little piece of one childhood becoming part of another.
More Than a Store
Lightbulb Lighthouse started with a toy, but it has grown into something bigger for us.
It is our little collection of the things we believe make childhood special.
Things that encourage imagination.
Things that allow children to do things for themselves.
Things that feel good to hold, wear, play with, and live with.
And most importantly, things that leave room for children to make them their own.
We don't expect every family to choose the same things we do. Childhood looks different for everyone, and that's part of what makes it wonderful.
We simply want to create a place where you can discover something a little different. Something you might not have seen before, something made with care, and perhaps something that becomes part of your family's story.
Because when we think back to our son's little Lightbulb Lighthouse, that's what we remember most.
Not just the toy itself, but the little world he created around it.
That is the feeling we hope to keep at the centre of everything we do. :)
