What do you actually buy for a newborn? A little guide to choosing something thoughtful, useful, and made to be loved.

There is something about shopping for a new baby that makes everything feel a little more special.

Tiny clothes. Tiny socks. Tiny hats. Little blankets. You can walk into a baby store and suddenly find yourself surrounded by hundreds of things you never knew a baby could possibly need.

And then comes the question:

What do I actually buy?

Whether you're going to a baby shower, visiting a friend who has just welcomed their first baby, or looking for a little something for a new baby in your own family, we think the best gifts don't necessarily have to be big.

Sometimes, it's just about finding one thoughtful little thing.

Start With What a Newborn Actually Does

Newborns don't need much in the way of toys.

They're busy figuring out the basics: looking at faces, listening to voices, discovering their hands, moving their bodies, and slowly beginning to notice the world around them.

So when we're choosing something for a newborn, we don't necessarily look for something that does everything.

We like simple things.

Something they can look at.

Something they can hold.

Something they can eventually reach for.

Something that can become part of those little everyday moments.

A first toy doesn't have to entertain a baby for an hour. At the beginning, even a few minutes of looking, touching, or listening can be enough.

A First Rattle

A rattle is one of those classic baby gifts for a reason. It's simple, but there's so much happening when a baby discovers that they made the sound. 

At first, they might simply look at it. Then they'll start reaching for it, holding it, moving it, and eventually shaking it on purpose.

We love a rattle that feels good in little hands and is beautiful enough that you'll want to keep it around.

It can be their first little introduction to cause and effect: “I did that!”

Something Soft to Love

A little doll, soft animal, or cuddly friend can make a lovely first gift.

One of our favourites is a Nanchen plush, handmade in Germany from organic cotton and filled with natural wool. They're wonderfully soft and simple, with a little bit of warmth and character that makes them feel like something special from the very beginning.

Also, there is something especially lovely about wool for a baby's first little friend. Natural wool can absorb and hold familiar scents, so over time, a doll can take on the comforting smell of home: a parent, grandparent, or other familiar caregiver. For a newborn, that familiar scent can make their little friend feel even more comforting and familiar.

For now, it might simply be something soft to hold, cuddle, or sleep beside.

Later, it can become the friend that gets carried around the house, tucked into bed, taken on trips, and included in all sorts of imaginary adventures.

We especially love toys that don't have one very specific purpose. The child gets to decide what they become.

A Beautiful First Book

You can never really go wrong with a book. A newborn may not understand the story yet, but books aren't only about understanding the words. 

They're about sitting together.

Hearing a familiar voice.

Looking at pictures.

Turning pages.

Creating a little ritual at the end of the day.

And eventually, that newborn who once just stared at the pictures will be pointing, laughing, choosing their favourite book, and asking you to read the same one again, and again.

A teether might not be the most glamorous baby first gift, but it can become one of the most useful.

Babies explore with their mouths. A simple teether gives them something safe to hold, chew, and explore as they discover all those new sensations.

Something practical can still be beautiful.

Something They Can Grow Into

One of the things we love about a good baby gift is when it doesn't have to be played with right away.

Maybe it's a little wooden animal, a stacking toy, or a simple doll. Something they can eventually carry around, stack, sort, build with, or bring into their own little games.

When we're choosing something for a new baby, we often ask ourselves one simple question:

Would we want to keep this?

Not because every baby gift needs to become a family heirloom. We just think it's a good way to pause and ask whether something feels thoughtful, well made, useful, beautiful, or simply special.

We're drawn to things that leave a little room for the child, things they can discover in their own way, grow into, and eventually make their own.

Sometimes it's the materials that catch our eye. Sometimes it's a beautiful colour or a tiny detail that makes us smile, and sometimes, it's just that feeling that this is something that could be loved for a long time.

A newborn doesn't need very much, but a little thoughtful gift can become part of so many little moments. :)
